Dear Family & Friends, Well, as you can imagine when January arrives most people let go a sigh of relief from the holidays. Well in Mexico it’s a little different because of different customs. The Christmas season is officially over on Kings Day which is January 6th. So the parties continue until that day. Then on the 7th of January we start school once again. But we are ready as the Christmas season is very intense and hard on us as there are so many demands on time & resources. What a belated Christmas gift to see those smiling faces and bright eyes once again. And what a welcome we received from our precious little ones. People say we spoil them but the Lord’s love is for everyone all the time and these children don’t receive enough attention, hugs & caring. After the first week we started receiving much needed volunteers to help us teach. On Jan. 15th Richard & Sue Rideout from Des Moines, Iowa joined us. It is fun to see other grandparents like us just be grandparents to our children here. Many of these children don’t even know if they have grandparents or maybe have never even met the grandparents. Some of the children have been abused by their own parents and taken away by Social Services to be placed with other relatives in the future. I don’t know if I ever told you about precious Niniver. She is 6 years old and the other children told us she can’t speak. Well, I made a real effort to get to know her and made sure to include her in all the activities in my class even though she appeared to be very withdrawn and shy. I made a point of always giving her a hug and saying her name. Well to my complete surprise after two months she started to really warm up to me. She would come running when I walked in the door and grab my hand. Then I would take her and we would skip to our teaching area. Then we would skip to go get the table and chairs for the class. She would take a chair and return to class. Then one day when I arrived she called out my name and I almost fell over. She could speak. It appears when she arrived she was very withdrawn & shy and the children picked on her thus driving her further into her shell. So now she feels safe with us there and is becoming more involved with the other children and starting to talk. Praise the Lord for His goodness in showing me how to reach her, by sharing His love we can overcome all things. On Monday, Jan. 19th we picked up Linda, a stewardess & Sharon Heut a retired Canadian Army Colonel Pharmacist from Canada at Sam’s Club and they blessed the children teaching and loving on the kids. On Tuesday, Jan 20th we picked up Glenn & Bonnie Spangler from Pennsylvania who just thoroughly enjoyed themselves by taking individual children aside to teach English, numbers etc. Glen was so excited that he came to me and asked “Can I bring my 8 year old grandson Jayden here to the orphanage?”. That was an easy question to answer. So on Friday, Jan 23rd. we picked up Glenn & his grandson Jayden at the Holiday Inn. Jayden immediately found a friend in Antonio and they played & studied for the whole hour while Grandpa Glenn was teaching them. I asked Jayden if he would like to be a Pen Pal to Antonio and he enthusiastically said yes. So I told him to send an e-mail letter with a picture to Antonio when he returned home. |
On Jan. 26th we picked Sharon Heut up again at Sam’s. Normally we have visitors for a time or two but Sharon has become a welcomed persistent teacher and hugger of our kids. When we have volunteers I try to always give them the same children for consistency sake. Sharon is working with Alexa (6 years old) who is one of our most studious & bright students, and Gloria who is (8 years old) who is one of our most difficult ornery & stubborn students, and Abigail (11 years old) who is a little lazy. So Sharon’s Army background is very beneficial. Hehe. Then on Jan. 27th the Ed & Teresa Tanner family joined us. Ed is a Royal Canadian Mounty and used his soft spoken voice while his wonderful wife used her very authoritive voice. I wonder who is the boss at home. Hehe. Sorry Ed, just kidding. As they still have their own children they fit in very quickly and took over my whole class which allowed me to take some pictures which will be in our Photo Gallery on the website. Then on Jan. 30th. we picked up Karen and Garry Gregorius from Washington. If you remember they came Nov. 27 to our house for Thanksgiving and left Dec. 7th to return to Washington. Well, it wasn’t long before we heard from them again saying “It’s too cold up here we are coming back”. Garry & Karen are long time supporters of our ministry dating back to 2003 when we were teaching at the School of Champions. They also became our Kinder Garden Teachers at the Escuela of Laguna Del Valle and what grand teachers they are. The kids just love them. Well, we not only used and abused them in Nov. & Dec. but also once again in January & February. Remember the drinking fountain & water purification system we needed for the kids. Well, Garry & Karen approached their pastor & church after their trip in Dec. Pastor ET Tapper & the Viewridge Coummunity Church of Everett, WA. took an offering and Garry & Karen brought down enough money to pay for the fountain & water purification system. We thank you so much for blessing these precious children who had to beg at the kitchen door hoping someone would pay attention to their immediate need for water. My dear friends, Faye & I can’t thank you enough for your outpouring of love, time & resources to help the less fortunate here in Mexico. We are seeing such wonderful gains in the children’s ability to read, write & speak English. They are also progressing in math & social skills because of your efforts. Next month I will send some pictures of the children actually doing math i.e. addition & multiplication. Many of you have asked us “What do you need”. That answer depends on whether you are going to come down or not. Most things can be purchased here so donations (see our donation page) work. But if you are coming down that is different. We always use Friday as our play day and a day to bless the kids for all their hard work. We give the girls hair ribbons, barrettes, costume jewelry, feminine perfumes etc. The boys get balls, hand held games, toy airplanes & cars etc. If you are flying and have access to clothes like children’s underpants & other usable children’s clothes that is very much needed. Or you can buy those items here also and bring them. Oh yes, throwaway diapers for children 3 months to 3 years. If any of you have specific questions please fire away. Just a heads up, friends! It appears that Faye & I may also be invited to teach at an Abused Girls Home called AGAPE next month. We will let you know. God bless. |
