February 2008

My dear family & friends,

February was not as short of month as it seems.  Many people joined us at the local outreach to help us teach.  We had the Zude family from Colorado, the Perrier family from Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada, the Gilkerson family from Manhattan, New York, the Kellner family from Washington State & the Nelson family from Minnesota, the Wickwire Family from Washington state & Carolina Reemeyer from Puerto Vallarta.  All came bearing gifts & resources for the children and most helped us teach during the weeks of their stays.

Some of the men like David Zude & Joel Kellner worked on building support columns on the second floor of the local outreach in anticipation of the completion of the second story.

Then Joel’s wife Leslie who is a registered nurse went with me to purchase Nix Head Lice shampoo from the pharmacy. She then attacked the prevalent head lice problem that plagues the poor children.  She spent a whole afternoon shampooing with NIX Head Lice Shampoo & combing the lice eggs out of three girls’ hair. Then re-shampooing with NIX, combing and using conditioner to assure the children were completely free of the lice.

Later in February we purchased more medicines to treat many of the sick suffering from a very bad virus which had even infected Faye & I.  After 6 weeks I was finally able to defeat my virus.  We had many babies, children and mom’s suffering from this persistent virus.  With Leslie’s help we were able to provide medicines to soften some of the symptoms. Leslie & Joel will be staying here in Puerto Vallarta until April.  After they return to the states they then will reassess their financial position and may return to Puerto Vallarta after a friends wedding. We sure hope so as they are a very selfless & valuable Christian couple. Their outreach to the children & families is greatly needed & appreciated.

No, I haven’t forgotten you, Ray & Patt. What another dedicated couple that has joined us full time.  What great teachers they have turned out to be.  The kids just love them both and even thought they are leaving also in April the children have won their hearts. They are looking to now buy a home here just so they can continue to teach and bless the children. Their latest exercise was to teach them to grow a garden in back of the school.  You just had to be there to see the smiles & glee in the children when the seeds started to poke through the soil.  Everyday is a new adventure as they see God’s handiwork flourish. Great job, Ray & Patt.

Well, February 23rd was a very exciting day for me. It was my oldest students Quinceanera (celebration of a girls 15th. birthday). Her name is Laura Davalos and what a beautiful fiesta was held for her. I have included some pictures of the event.  Remember, that the family saves their money for years to provide for this event. Laura’s family doesn’t live in or next to the dump, but her family is still what we would consider very poor. She has two other teenage sisters and a sweet mother (Lucy) who is working everyday in the mission school kitchen so her children could eat.  Now because of the generosity of you our contributors, I am able to give the women kitchen helpers (4) a salary of $150 pesos (less than $15 dollars) a week. These women come day in and day out to make sure their children get fed and also get an education. Praise the Lord.

I know I have thanked each one of you personally but Faye & I can’t thank you enough for all your efforts, resources & love of the children.  The school is growing because of the Lord’s love directed through each one of your efforts here with the poor children of the local outreach Mission School. God bless and we know we will either see or hear from you faithful servants again. Please forgive me if I left out your name.
